Do you know the typical development stages and milestones for an 18 month old? After eighteen months, your baby has passed several different growth and learning stages. Make sure they are developing on schedule, and recognize signs of delayed cognitive and communication growth.
Is your child developing on track? No two children develop, grow, and learn in the same way or at the same pace. However, they do develop in certain predictable ways, as show in our videos. Help Me Grow helps parents know, and know what to do next if they think their child might be delayed. Visit helpmegrowmn.org/ for more information or to refer a child for a free developmental screening today.

My daughter Lilly is 18 months old and she is walking very well without support, she can say cat, hello, bye bye, mama, dada, bubble and a few other words too. She also has a bad temper bless her if no one gives her what she wants. Lilly's doctor said my daughter is very intelligent and that shes going to do very well later in life.

I honestly believe that all toddlers learn at their own pace. My Son did not speak until he was 3 1/2.
If I would of taken him to a doctor regarding his speech., he would of been labelled as autistic.
My Son was not in the spectrum at 3 1/2 and he is not in the spectrum now.

My son was NOT speaking at 18 months and, in fact, did not talk until around 24 months when he entered daycare. He is now 14 years old, in several advanced classes in high school, and is doing very well. Parents, sometimes our babies develop on their own time. Sometimes they just need a little nudge! :)

A kiddo I watch doesn’t do any of this.....
He actually won’t do any of these
1. Won’t make eye contact
2. No emotion really but crying screaming, waves hands and scream.
3. No words at all. Won’t shake head no or yes
4. Doesn’t understand simple one worded directions like “sit” “stop” “no”
5. doesn’t point
Kenya
Hey did he ever get any better ? My daughter is acting similar but she laughs , have some sort of reaction . She doesn’t respond to her name or point . She claps though . She says no but I don’t know if she does it because she really means no or not ...

My 17 month just learned to count to 10 I’m so happy
tristan carson
@Jenni H It's true. My son is 18 months and when he counts he points or has objects that he is showing the numbers with. I am very hands on with his development but he actually started doing that on his own. Some children understand the concept of counting rather early but most are repeating what they hear.
Jenni H
@J McK At 18 months my oldest could count to 10. It was route memorization and she didn't understand what she was doing but she could count. Also some very gifted children can actually count and understand what the numbers mean as early as 12 months. It's incredibly unlikely but definitely possible.
Bon Bronson
@J McK My 18mo old can also count to 10, but she misses numbers and needs me to count with her. We've been practicing counting since she was 1yr old. Some kids pick up verbal skills faster than others. It could be BS, but it might also be a fast learner.

Ismail Sharifi there’s nothing to fix! Your son is beautiful and perfect. Love him the way he is, he’s ready when he ready or that’s just his nature.

I have a 17 month old who used to point at everything non stop now he rarely points at all. He just tells me what he wants. Or says what he thinks is interesting instead of pointing at it. For example:instead of pointing at a train he will say “CHOO CHOO TRAIN!” Is this normal?? He talks non stop. Repeats words and mimics us. Follows simple instructions. Everything in this video except for pointing anymore. It’s really worrying me.
Aaryn Lee
Kasey Fletcher what kind of mimicry? i may be able to help you
Fraise86
My boy just turned 16 months today. He knows simple instructions already.. shake hands, give mommy (stuffs), he is starting to recognize some of his body parts too when asked. I guess he is a little early.

They dont have to speak 5 words :) but other than that okay :)

My son learned "Up" when he was about 10 months. He'll say Mama and Dada, but it's usually "Mamamamamamama," not a clear two-syllable name. What worries me (and why I'm looking at videos) is that he hasn't learned many words since. He's 20 months now and mostly just babbles, "Durka durka durka." Every doctor gives you one of the two worst answers. 1) Every child is different, don't worry about it. 2) Serious problems. You should run a hundred tests right away.
AT Valle
Randall Syfert this can be very stressful. I feel with parents going through this in my line of work. If you'd like to reach out to me can answer any questions as best I can ☺
Shara cy
Randall Syfert hi i feel the exact same way but what i tell myself most days is give him time, love him lots and teach him, give him the chance to be himself and blossom, especially if he's reached the other milestones and im sure surpassed some. My son started interacting more and saying a bit more, follow your gut and be his biggest advocate 😊

I have an 17 months old, he says ball, two, jump, bye, no, blanket in my language, bottle in my language, but not mommy yet! He runs & jump ! & kicks and throw the ball. Every kid learns differently! My oldest first word was mommy and that wasn't until he was 18months. Now he's three, he talks non stop! Lol
AT Valle
Leonidas Thao every child is so different and these milestones are quite flexible.

I have a 17 month old with no words. Typical in every other way...
jugal joshi
@AT Valle hi, so I'm another overly concerned parent. How can I DM you?
Ancient Knowledge
My baby is 15 months and is not talking, maybe because boys develop words later but his Dr wanted him saying 3 words by 12 months. He does say Mom, mama, baba, ball, papaw (not clearly) but I'm not sure he knows what it means as it's vague.

my 17 month old only walks along the couch but he learned everything late and has caught up a lot and already hit some of the 18 month milestones

Obviously, an 18-month-old is a toddler, but is it normal to still refer to them still as babies? Like, for example, instead of saying that I've got two teens and a toddler at home, I'd say that I've got two teens and a baby at home? As a 28-year-old woman who doesn't have kids of her own, but plenty of nieces and nephews, I hear both terms being thrown around a lot - one of my sisters even still refers to her 2-year-old as a baby - and I was just wondering if people in general still call tots babies, even though it technically isn't correct?
Ugh, I'm not sure if this question makes much sense.
Jenni H
At the pediatrician they are babies till 2 and as far as people referring to their own children baby insinuates youngest and it's hard to give up on them being a baby.
Nina Jayy
To me there are still babies...at 2 maybe even 3

my daughter 17 months n is walking but wabbe. She doesn't point to things or say a lot of words. The doctors going to have her see an audiolog about it next week.
liloboy911808
+Daisy Maha well now at 2 in just a few days. Her walking has improved a lot. She sometimes get her falls when running. But even that is slowly getting better. Her words are improvising good too. She saying more words then daddy all the time. She can even say about 2 or more sentences at times. Even does a great job memorizing the songs from your favorite cartoon shows she sings along too. Pointing however... not too much! Hoping that will improve once she is 3. :)
Saeeda Batool
+liloboy911808 hii... hows ur toddler doing now ?? i have a 18 month girl ... all her milestones are achieved except talking ... she just says Daddy that too once in a blue moon, though she has her own babbling language.

+liloboy911808 great to see that she has been improving so much. I hope my son stays still when doing the test. :)
liloboy911808
@pitipe well the last time we took her they ran a few test. Such as, having her focus on sounds on which direction they're coming from, looking at pictures and stuff. She did great and pass. They did say she maybe just a little late on speech. Because back then she was not saying much. Now at 2 years old she does say a few words including a few sentences (2 or 3 maybe) . Her pointing...is ok!, her walking has improve great
pitipe
+liloboy911808 Mine have an appointment too, how did everything went?

Thank god for this video. Every parenting website sets the milestones bar very high and puts unnecessary pressure on parents.
The one I just read said an 18 month old should be able to say 50 -100 words. Get real!
Chris Applewhite
I was raised by those booked, when I came out on my birthday I was already able to recite the pledge of allegiance and I pumped so much iron I became a solid ball of muscle
Kevin Johnson
Right!!
AT Valle
phillip eskridge I agree with you 100% I am well versed with developmental milestones because it is all I have done in the past 10 years. But a lot of the milestones just create unrealistic expectations and added pressure when we should really just enjoy our children ☺
Jose Soto
phillip eskridge completely agree, I feel your pain
Freak154l
phillip eskridge holy cow.. 50-100 words? My son is 13 months old and he's just saying blah blah for the most part but understand words when I say dog, mom, dad no, yes and many others... He talks but it's not anything I can understand. He walks amazing if I hold just one hand. He walks with holding really well. I'm trying to find what is realistic goals for my child? It's made me feel like I'm not doing my father role well, it stinks! Doesn't help he's up at 430 am wide awake ready to go haha... Thanks for your comment - good to know we aren't alone! Can u or anyone recommend what is Good for him to watch or Listen to that will help him and not put him in a trance? These baby shows and baby first we don't always allow because he'll get in a trance sometimes? Thanks!

Find an early intervention team in your county and ask them to evaluate her or take her to a developmental pediatrician.

My daughter doesnt respond to her name or point to things of interest!! but she does other things normally.. what should i do??
Aaryn Lee
you are describing red flags of Autism spectrum disorder.
Squirrel Fish
Neither does my son, he just attacks what he wants (i mean reaches for it) He doesn't respond to his name but he responds to Baby, Swamp Monster and Wrecking Ball hahaha I'm not worried at all. I just stop predicting his needs so he has to ask or point... It's harder for me not to use the pet names so it may be a while for his name to set in
Chelsea Long
babies just grow at they're own rate maybe it might take your daughter a litté longer to do things it's normal

May she focuses on something else or has ear infection you should ask her doc.
