First time i watch The Fresh Prince of Bel-air was 2011-2012. And before that i know Will Smith only from his movies.
Year before that my father died, and i fall into a depression. And i thinking to watch a lot of comedy shows to beat the sadness. After watching Friends, Two and a Half men, Spin City, Cheers and then i saw Fresh Prince...
My dad was big bald mustashe guy, verry scary when got angry but at the same time he was generous, kind, funny and verry verry loveble person....great dancer too for his weight.
This show and James Avery character saved me from depression.

When they talked about him and all the good memories they had he was smiling down from heaven saying yep I did a good job RIP, Uncle Phil, you will always be remembered as the dad of television everyone loved

I was a white kid in an all white town in a state that's almost all white people. This show put a optimistic view on a "stable" family taking in a "troubled kid". I was adopted at 9. No other show addressed a situation as close to my own as this one did. Granted my experiences weren't joyous funny or even effective. It was nice seeing a better example on screen though. Sadly we didn't watch TV in my adoptive home, however once a week we went into town to a local pizzeria and when we went the newest episode of Fresh Prince was always playing. The adoptive parents didn't plan it, that was just their schedule. He did seem to be the ultimate father figure, of which I have never personally witnessed anything comparable. (I can't think of a father figure on screen that appeared to be even a "acting father" better.
My view on fathers was always and remains a view of about-to-erupt-in-anger.

The only time I have shed a tear on hearing someone I had never met had passed away.
