ARM chips by Apple is not that powerful against Intel and AMD chips basically Macs will then be unsuitable for beefy softwares like 3D rendering, gaming and etc... In short they'll become underpowered laptops which isn't a good idea they are better off to just stick with Intel chips

I used an Acorn computer about 1999-2000; it was really old. We had one in the school I taught at - the Original Sibelius Music Score Software was written by the Finn brothers (based in either Cambridge ). It could do more things than it’s later Windows version. Really good machine was that Acorn.

"... disruptive innovations involve no new technologies; rather they consist of components built around proven technologies that are put together in novel architectures, offering the consumer a set of attributes never before available." This describes Steve Jobs to a tee. You still hear people today who say that "Jobs didn't invent anything, he copied other people's products." In some sense this is true, but it was Jobs who pulled together these disparate technologies to make products that consumers had never seen before. First the Mac, then iMac, then iPod, then the iPhone, then iPad. His last legacy will no doubt be the M1 because it was Jobs who in 2008 went out and bought Palo Alto Semi for a mere $278M, a steal in hindsight. No one knew at the time why Apple (read: Jobs) bought them. Now in the year 2020, 9 years after his death, we see what Jobs was up to. He continues to disrupt, even from the grave.

If you think about it, the real performance caps of chips long-term are related to physics, that is, power consumption and heat dispersion. If Apple can have the same performance from a 5 watt chip as Intel gets from a 125 watt chip, what prevents manufacturers from simply synchronizing a couple dozen Apple chips and getting performance an order of magnitude greater with the same physical constraints? Efficiency *is* performance.

Nice one, Skippy. I'm certainly not smart enough in this field to ridicule others for their technology choices.
So when are these things going to become available to people too poor to buy a new i-Phone?
I'm probably now an old fogey, but it still seems to me that much of the advances in speed are largely swallowed up by less efficient programming and increased extraneous uses (plus advertising). Things should be a lot faster than they are, to the end user. Not so? My newest laptop doesn't seem to boot up and load programs any faster (to the point where the human starts interactively using it) than PCs did in the late 1990s. sometimes they seem to take forever to even shutdown properly. I can't believe it's all just down to poisoning from my web browsing.

Uhm... no. It didn't. it only managed to reduce their external costs and created a complexinternal revenue maelstorm to confuse investors. It's not the first time Apple gives in to entropy. They have done this a lot in the past. They would even make their own cardboard boxes. And that is why they almost went bankrupt. Hopefully, they learned something out of that.

To be fair Intel has not made a new cpu sins 2015. everything up form the 6000 series is just a refresh of a refresh all the way up to the 10 series.
Intel is having a AMD moment. Were there stuck now for years on a nm process, that just to power hungry to keep up, and there focus on pure GHZ and duo and quad core chips has failed Intel. If intel would have stayed stubborn and not release more the quad cores, intel would now be in a lot more trouble.
The jump in cores during the 8000 series for quad to hex and more saved Intel and passing the 5 ghz mark that made it really fun for overklockers. But other then that there was little reason for anyone to buy Intel. Only programs that rely on high Ghz chips have real intel applications these days and those program are mostly older ones. Intel is arrogant and they let so many chances slip, because that.
Apple too if they would make a cpu i could put in my own hardware i would buy it, but i really dont like the apple ecosystem, and if i can't take it apart and water cool it. What is the fun in it.
But really first AMD bitch slaps intel and now Apple comes with a, i told you so sukker punch. It is a bad year to be Intel: Good for them they were, really greedy. So they have some reserves. To bad people hate them for there greed. so its gone need a lot off good pr and a amazing innovation in there CPU to get us back to intel.
interesting, because a lot of cool gadgets, VR head sets, little robots, you can make have one issue, they need more cpu power, and longer battery life.

This ties in to Apples NWO by making what were the most premium priced, best marketed devices (but not always the best performing or best built) into less premium priced but better perfroming, better built devices, but locked into an closed ecosystem of expensive services ( music, tv, cloud, financial transactions ). The marketing is now easy for them as they really do have the best performers at a lower price differential to the Intel/AMD based offerings.

Thing is, a lot of these manufacturers have been aware of the benefits of RISC architecture for quite a while. I think they just never went for it because standard x86 worked just fine and pretty much every piece of desktop software worked with it. Obviously Intel and AMD kind of have to do something to compete with Apple here, and that’s what Apple does best I think. Come along every couple of years and kick some section of the tech industry in the ass somehow.

  • The Dream Traveler

Specifically comparing Apple's chip to Intel's seems unfair...have you not seen how awful Intel's cpu's are? they've been using the same tech on purpose with 12 year old techology now because of no competition. Once the amd Ryzen cpus came out they completely stomped intel's chips. One of amd's cheapest chips from 2019 is now more powerful than intel's top of the line cpu from 2017 specifically because they became complacent and saw no need to keep innovating. Of course intel's cpu's based on tech from the mid 2000s would perform worse to apple's brand new tech in 2020. If you did this same test with a top of the line amd ryzen cpu this would be a lot different. Then you don't take into account that a desktop has to run a OS where the cpu was not specifically designed for that OS in the first place.
Apple has the luxury of making their chip as efficient as possible because they also build the hardware and software themselves. If desktops could do this they would be a lot faster as well. How come you don't mention this?

How can someone hold and look at an iPhone for the first time in their lives, back when it was first created, and not immediately know that this was going to be the way of the future? Seriously? I still semi-remember the feelings (not the when or where since I was too young, but it had such an impact on me that I still remember how I FELT somewhat) I had when I first saw one myself..
I was shocked something like that could exist. I remember thinking that this had to be the future and that I had time traveled. I think I remember an adult who worked at my elementary school's daycare being the one who showed it to me. I just couldn't believe it.
How can someone not know that this was going to be huge? He thought it was going to flop? Lmao yeah right. He must've been planning something big behind the scenes with some other companies in an attempt to do a coordinated attack on apple shortly before being asked to sign a deal, and thought that apple would be taken care of anyways so a deal would only hinder things... What he/they didn't know, was that the iPhone was too transcending of it's time, and nothing... NOTHING could stop Apples rise.
Otherwise... I don't understand how anyone could think the iPhone would flop, even if they were elderly people who weren't big into technology... Even the elderly love the iPhone just as much as a kid would. Everyone knew it was gonna be huge.
I'm just more confused than anything. Most situations like this I would just be like, "Whelp, sucks to be them."... But this just makes no sense. Someone pls help before my brain implodes and I transcend. It's still too early for my transcension!!!!

Great video, but doesn't point out one massive implication - It opens a future where software developers no longer have to write a version for iPhone and another for MacBook because they use the same CPUs. So new software will get to market quicker and cost less to create, making the Apple eco system more attractive to developers, meaning more software and therefore utility for the Apple eco system.

I am sorry but have to say this. The m1 chip is just an new ipad chip in a laptop chip clothing. if you think closely. Why now the mac can run ios app just like a phone. M1 and the future m1 series are just new "exclusive " ipad chip technology adding addtional cores to it. it is just old stuff back in steve jobs era they were already doing it. only difference is addtional cores. but you know apple now is a marketing beast, just advertise the combined and redo ipad chip with a new name : M1, I am not even a tech guy and i can sense the scam smell of it. Especially when they show the performance score , geekbench and stuff. which everyone is talking about how good the score is, but no one even think about it. If I invent a chip set and ask geekbench to develop special version of their app for my chip , it will certainly performe better on numbers! becos the software has already been modified for the chip! it is just a marketing thing! like if I ask geekbench to develop geekbench app for my specific 10 years old i3-3323 chip, the result will be improved compared to the unmodified geekbench!

Well I remember Apple telling the world that there computers are the most powerful personal computers and then they had to go to intel because of the Power Pc chip falling behind intel chips and the G5 producing to much heat, when Apple started producing there own iPhone chips I wondered if those would evolve into a PC chip and here is my answer, YEP and I thought that the fact a phone had no fan and yet was so quick I wondered if that would be an advantage and the answer was Yep. I just didn’t realize that there chips would be so wicked fast and out shine intel in such a profound way ! Heck I remember having a G4 chip in my PowerBook and thinking that how would anyone out preform the intel chips with 2 cores , that was in early 2006 and look at Apple now ! Good Lord how they going to sell the Apple computers with an intel chip in them now? Why wouldn’t you wait to get the Apple computer with a M1 or M2 chip rather then spending your hard earned money on the Apple computer with the intel chip that’s so out classed ?

The sad thing is that the "owner" of this technology is the one company where they don't like user freedom, even for cleaning the inside of their own stuffs, hence their custom shaped screw.
Too much dust = Hotter parts = Throttle Down & Less lifespan = Things that is still usable becomes unbearable to use = Buying a new one = More trash, I laughed so hard when they said they're supporting cleaner earth by not including a charger on their iphone 12, since people will buy them anyway, and if they buy a cheap one it might not work well, which means they'll buy another one or two. (yeah, peoples that work in marketing department usually hates me)
Intel pretty much 1 foot inside the coffin already the day they let AMD returns from grave and show the world how Intel pretty much deliberately halted the advancement of home user CPU all these years, especially now with Ryzen 5000 series. Heard they're planning a comeback with their new CEO, but yea so far whenever they say that, they fail to deliver.
And if one gonna use a game to determine a system greatness, League of Legends is certainly not the one you're supposed to use anyway. It's played by a lot of people yeah, but it's not exactly a demanding game. Where throttling down due to heat caused by a demanding game is one of the biggest issue of a powerful system.
Desktop = What is broken? replace that part(s) easily, and have a new warranty on that replaced part. I still have a desktop from 12 years ago still works fine even for light to medium photoshopping.
Apple = Most likely you'll end up buying a new one because the fixing cost gonna be near a new one anyway.
Don't even get me started about Apple OS, I would've gone mac if only they don't try to restrict me too much. But I agree that Apple OS is easy to use or adapt to, for even the most tech / IT unsavvy user.

You have to develop the CPU and Asus doesn't have neither resources, nor the license for that. A competition for Apple M1 might come from Huawei, nVidia, AMD, Qualcomm or Samsung as these are the only companies that have the license and appropriate resources. I think nVidia is the most likely to come up with something big, as they now own the entire ARM. And I'm pretty sure there was a pretty good reason behind this acquisition. And I hope AMD and Samsung won't stay behind. Would be nice to have some real competition on the CPU/GPU/SoC market.

Saying the apple silicon chips are better is very debatable yet, and very much depends on your workflow. I feel there's a lot you could have done a bit better here, you could have described what the advantage and disadvantage of the reduced instruction set are. That with a reduced instruction set you can run faster and more efficient, but that having more instructions allow you to do more specific things more quickly. It's like having a massive toolbox vs a small one. Both you might be able to get all the jobs done, but it's faster to find something in the smaller one, but it's faster to get the job done with the bigger one.
I also feel like you should have talked a bit about how intel has stagnated soo badly. That's probably the biggest reason why Apple was able to catch them so quickly. I mean AMD had made similar massive strides in recent years to very quickly surpass Intel. That's all because Intel has been essentially standing still for 5 years (because they didn't have any competition).
Saying that reduced instruction set processors are faster is just wrong, and the same is true for saying apples new chips are just the fastest out there. They definitely aren't, but they absolutely are for their power consumption. And because of this it is a huge market disrupter, and it is
I do agree with it being a market disrupter, and a huge one at that. It will be really cool to see where Apple goes with this, there's a lot of places they could go. Just immagine this sort of efficiency if they can adapt to a server environment. That would wipe the floor in such a space where operating costs are much much more of a concern than in the personal marketplace.

In other words intels been slowing technology frm advancing, if they took apples deal we could have been years ahead if they both worked together to develop the ARM processor. Instead the lazy b@$tards didnt want to, i hope intel goes bankrupt

Lazy ? no. Intel is just greedy. Well, Apple too. A ship with 2 captains will sink. AMD pretty much shown the PC community how greedy Intel was by giving Hyperthreading on all their CPUs and Not changing AM4 socket for 5 years.

Imagine if most servers ran high end ARM chips in future. Just think if these and businesses started using ARM not x86. There would be lower power use and lower heat given out from server rooms and pcs. One thing is if Apple are leading the curve the improvements will be heavilly pattented and likely lock others out unless new methods of imrovement are found.

At 17:00 you offer a video comparing an Apple smartphone and an Apple Intel laptop. Is this one of their designs where there is plenty of thermal throttling on the Apple laptop which prevents it from performing ideally (as is so often the case with Apple PCs)?

This presentation is glib, but poorly researched and inaccurate.
    1. The Acorn Risc Machine was developed for the Acorn Archimedes computer - a desktop.
    2. Referring to the ARM processor format as a "mobile chip" is deliberatley misleading. RISC processors were a SGI specialty.
    3. Intel produced ARM processors, but sold the family to Marvell prior to the release of the iPhone.
    4. The RISC processor design was nothing new when ARM was deeloped. RISC CPUs from MIPS and other families had been in high performance workstations for years
    5. Characteriing CISC is full of inrequently-used instructions is misleading. In practice, modern x86 processors work much like RISC machines internally; ARM's modern improvements can be found elsewhere.
    6. The majority of Apple's power consumption advantage is due to superior manufacturing methods - they're on a 5nm process, and smaller transistors means less power. AMD is still on 7nm for cost reasons, while Intel is still on 10nm. Were Intel producing on the same assembly line, they'd have much closer results - and Intel, via outsourcing, may do exactly that.
    7. The high end desktop machines of the era were all RISC - Apple's PowerPC, SGI's MIPS, DEC's Alpha, IBM's POWER, and Sun's UltraSPARC desktop workstations all ran circles around Itnel's silicon. The speed advantage was mostly a result of budget - a well equipped SGI Indy cost over $70,000 in today's money, and a maxed out SPARC box was even worse.
    8. Incidentally, Intel - not RISC - had superior power consumption for the era.
    9. The iPod was not the first major ARM product line. DEC licensed it to produce the StrongARM product line in the 90s, and the iPod was one of many products to use it including the Game Boy Advance and many more.
    10. When Intel rejected developing the processor for the iPhone, they were comparing their own products to existing options from MIPS, Marvell, and more. Apple designing low-power mobile processors would've been like Peterbilt or Mack developing a subcompact hatchback.
    11. Many of Apple's early iPhone processors compared poorly; it was superior optimization that produced the performance. They also failed to support 3G, 4G, and LTE until long after their competitors.
    12. The majority of Apple's iPhone revenue was from software, not hardware.
    13. The graph you post is misleading; that's for one core, and the 10900k has ten of them. The performance from the A14 and M1 are a huge improement on anything from intel of comparable cost and power consumption, but under real-world loads like media production, the 10900k is still quite a lot faster. Furthermore, it's a high performance desktop chip; there's a far more efficient laptop version as well.
    14. Intel's largest competitor AMD also outsources its' production - to TSMC, the same fab facility that produces the M1.
    15. The M1 is outperformed by laptop processors from AMD by a substantial margin.
    16. The M1 has additional redundant instructions (ironically enough) to improve X86 compatibility. Running high performance applications like Photoshop has a substantial penalty.
Characterizing ARM as a disruptive technology is disingenuous; twenty years ago, it was an expensive luxury technology.
Perhaps you should stick to subjects on which you are not obliged to spew marketing drivel.

Most often it's caused when an Apple user says something like how Apple's stuffs is the greatest and Steve Jobs is god. Mainly because windows user are free to tweak their system almost however they want. From cleaning it's inside up to replacing a broken part with way cheaper cost and ease. Hence they hate the business practice that Apple employs, like: Not using a widely used connector like USB, requiring special apple adapter to just add an HDD/SSD to a mac, mandatory itunes. Me personally I only hate buying expensive stuffs that makes me feels like I'm only borrowing it. I don't hate Apple user though, as long they don't start messing with my "world".

What a shallow video! You've completely missed the point about RISC architecture, which emerged in the 1980's, gave rise to the Workstation revolution, and gave users the power of a small mainframe on their desktop. Sun Microsystems was a leader in this marketplace, along with several others. RISC made efficient use of the silicon chip "real estate" by: 1) eliminating complex instructions that could be accomplished using existing simpler instructions. 2) making all instructions the same length to facilitate pipe-lining (i.e. assembly line execution where multiple instruction steps can be executing during the same clock cycle, such as operand pre-fetch, address indirection, etc), 3) Pairing the RISC chip with custom software compilers to optimize pipe-line processing (e.g. branch prediction, loop unrolling, etc). This allowed RISC chips to do more, per clock cycle, than anything from Intel. The Intel instruction set was designed in the 1970's during the era of expensive memory and thus was "byte oriented" with instructions having variable length, to conserve memory space. You can't pipe-line Intel instructions easily because until you decode and execute the "Nth" instruction you can't tell where the "N+1th" begins in the data stream and so on. Apple abandoned the PowerPC and went to Intel because IBM could not meet demand for PowerPC chips and that was a bad technological decision IMHO. Thankfully they've come to their senses and found a solution to, once again, utilize the superior RISC technology in their products.
